Order a tensioner when you needed an idler, and the truck waits days for the right part. A Dayco belt tensioner is the spring-loaded arm and pulley that keeps the accessory belt at the right tension. An idler or roller has no spring and only guides the belt. For Scania, the Dayco tensioners are APV2729 and APV1120. APV1121 is an idler and APV3064 is a roller. For Volvo FH and FM, the tensioner is APV1151.
This guide is for fleet engineers and workshop buyers across ASEAN who maintain Scania and Volvo trucks and buses. It shows how to tell the three parts apart, spot a failing tensioner and order the right part the first time.
What does a Dayco belt tensioner do?
A belt only works at the right tension. Too loose, and it slips, squeals and runs hot. Too tight, and it loads the bearings in the alternator, water pump and other accessories.
The tensioner solves this automatically. A spring pushes an arm, and a pulley on the end of the arm presses against the belt. As engine speed rises and falls and the belt stretches with wear, the tensioner keeps the tension steady. Because engine speed changes all day, the tensioner works all day.
Dayco's heavy-duty aftermarket range includes heavy-duty tensioners and dual-bearing pulleys for trucks and buses.
What is the difference between a tensioner, an idler and a roller?

Part | Has a spring arm? | Job | Dayco examples
|
|---|---|---|---|
Belt tensioner | Yes | Keeps the belt at the right tension | APV2729, APV1120 (Scania); APV1151 (Volvo) |
Idler / guide pulley | No | Guides the belt around the engine and increases wrap on other pulleys | APV1121 (Scania) |
Idler roller | No | Guides the belt on its path | APV3064 (Scania) |
All three have bearings, and bearings wear. On a Scania engine they share one belt path and do the same hours, so when one is worn, the others are rarely far behind.
Is Dayco APV1121 a tensioner or an idler?
APV1121 is an idler (guide) pulley, not a tensioner. The same applies to APV3064, which is an idler roller, not a tensioner. Some older online listings, including some of our own, described them as tensioners. We are correcting ours.
Not sure which one you have? Send us a photo and the OE number from the old part, and we will tell you.
What are the warning signs of a failing belt tensioner?
Watch and listen for these three signs. Each one is easy to ignore until the part fails and the truck stops.
Chirp or squeal. A noise that comes and goes, often at start-up or when the air-con cuts in, can mean the tensioner spring is weak and the belt is slipping. A rumble or grind from the front of the engine points to a worn pulley bearing.
Poor belt tracking. A belt that runs off-centre, wears on one edge or frays points to a tensioner arm or pulley out of line.
Arm flutter. With the engine idling, watch the tensioner arm. If it shakes or bounces, the tensioner is no longer damping the belt properly.
Also check for play or wobble in the pulley, grease leaking from a bearing seal, and an arm that sticks instead of moving freely. [Workshop team to review these checks before publishing]
Singapore heat and stop-start traffic speed up bearing wear, so these checks belong in every belt-drive inspection.
Which Dayco tensioners, idlers and rollers fit Scania?
On Scania trucks (P/G/R/T, 4-Series, L/S) and buses (K/N/F, Citywide, Touring) with DC9, DC13 and DC16 engines, these auxiliary-drive parts form one matched set.

APV2729 or APV1120? It depends on the model and engine. Send us the OE or chassis number, and we will confirm before you order.
Which Dayco belt tensioner fits Volvo FH and FM?
For Volvo FH, FM and FMX trucks with D11 and D13 engines, the Dayco belt tensioner is APV1151. It cross-references to Volvo 20739751, 20935521, 21422765, 3979979 and 85013020. The matching belt is 10PK1342SHD. See our Volvo FH belt tensioner guide
Why change the tensioner, idler and belt together?
A worn tensioner or idler bearing can destroy a new belt quickly, and you pay the labour twice. A failed drive stops the alternator, water pump and air-con at the same time. The truck is off the road, or the bus is out of service. Dayco recommends checking all the components of the accessory drive together and replacing them where needed. It offers more than 130 heavy-duty kits for this job.
If the parts have done the same hours, change them in one visit. It costs less than a second breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dayco APV1121 a tensioner or an idler pulley?
Dayco APV1121 is an idler (guide) pulley for Scania engines, not a tensioner. It has no spring arm. It guides the belt and usually runs on the same belt path as the APV2729 or APV1120 tensioner.
What is the difference between a belt tensioner and an idler pulley?
A belt tensioner has a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt at the right tension. An idler pulley has no spring; it only guides the belt. Both have bearings that wear, so check them together.
How do I know my truck belt tensioner is bad?
Look for three signs: a chirp or squeal, a belt that tracks off-centre or frays, and a tensioner arm that flutters at idle. A rumble from the pulley or play in the bearing are also warnings.
Should I replace the tensioner when I replace a truck poly-V belt?
Usually, yes. Dayco recommends checking all accessory-drive components together and replacing them where needed. A worn tensioner can quickly damage a new belt.
