A squealing belt on a Volvo FH is easy to ignore. A roadside breakdown and a lost delivery slot are not. The Dayco Volvo FH belt tensioner is APV1151. It fits Volvo FH, FM and FMX trucks with D11 and D13 engines, and cross-references to Volvo OE numbers 20739751, 20935521, 21422765, 3979979 and 85013020. Pair it with the Dayco 10PK1342SHD Poly-V belt. Confirm fitment with Scantruck Engineering Pte Ltd, Singapore before you order.

Dayco makes its heavy-duty Poly-V belts from EPDM rated to 130 °C. That matters on Volvo prime movers and rigids working hot, stop-start routes. High under-bonnet temperatures and long idling speed up belt and bearing wear.

The belt and the tensioner work as a pair. A weak tensioner lets the belt slip and glaze. A worn belt makes the tensioner arm travel further and work harder. Dayco recommends checking all the accessory-drive components together and replacing them where needed. That is why we quote the tensioner and belt as one job.

What does the tensioner do on a Volvo D13?

Dayco APV1151 belt tensioner fitted on a Volvo D13 engine

The accessory belt on a D13 drives the alternator, water pump, air-con compressor and other accessories. The tensioner keeps that belt at the right tension, all the time. A spring pushes the arm, and the pulley on the arm presses against the belt. As engine speed changes and the belt wears, the tensioner keeps the tension steady.

When it fails, everything on the belt stops together. The batteries stop charging, the engine can overheat, and the cab air-con goes warm. On a long-haul or distribution truck, that is a roadside breakdown and a lost delivery slot.

When should you replace a Volvo FH belt tensioner?

Check the tensioner every time you service the belt, and replace it when you see any of these signs.

  1. Chirp or squeal that comes and goes, especially at start-up or when the air-con cuts in. The belt is slipping, often because the spring is weak.

  2. Poor belt tracking. The belt runs off-centre, wears on one edge or frays.

  3. Arm flutter. At idle, the tensioner arm shakes or bounces instead of holding steady.

  4. Bearing noise or play. A rumble from the pulley, or wobble when you rock it by hand.

  5. Grease leaking from the pulley seal.

If the belt is due and the tensioner has done the same hours, change both in one visit. A tensioner costs less than a second breakdown.
